Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is an artificial groundwater aquifer recharge option. Water is introduced into the groundwater through soil percolation under controlled conditions. Direct Aquifer Injection and Surface Spreading Recharge Systems are the two SAT methods commonly used.
The town of Atlantis is located about 50km north of Cape Town on the dry west coast of South Africa. Since the 1970s, it has relied on an innovative process whereby storm water and treated domestic wastewater is transferred underground to be stored in an aquifer for future use. The CSIR provides technical and scientific support to this project, called the Atlantis Water Supply Scheme.
Ground water may flow through an aquifer at a rate of 50 feet per year or 50 inches per century, depending on the permeability. But no matter how fast or slow, water will eventually discharge or leave an aquifer and must be replaced by new water to replenish or recharge the aquifer.
