Flow rate and operation of slow sand filter explained along with gradiation of fine sand and gravel below the source water.

Flow rates of 0.015-0.15 gpm/ ft^2 expected for typical performance with entry water of < 10 NTU.. Two day period of establishing Schmutzdecke Algal layer on the surface of the slow sand filter is explained and how that period sends water passing though back to the waste water well rather than stored in the clearwell.

Capture the rain! (Now legal in Washington state). A quick look at roof water harvesting using a slow sand filter combined with a diverter. This is an overview of the procedure and a demonstration of a working system. An instructional video on how to build a system can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-_RDB… As of September 18, 2016 this filter is still running and producing clean water. The sand has not been changed. See www.slowsandfilter.org and www.shared-source-initiative.c… for lots more information on these filters. Also www.roofwaterharvesting.org and www.enlight-inc.com/blog/ are two sites that have detailed instructions on how to build one of these filters. Do your own water testing: www.micrologylabs.com/categor… What kind of sand to use: www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?m=20… www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?m=20… The water test results from this filter (called filer 1) can be found at our website here: slowsandfilter.org/results_fou… Scroll about half way down the page. There’s lots of info there, and more than just one test has been done. The filter works.

this video points out that sand particle size is not as important as the maintenance of the biological surface layer (where 99.9% of the filtration occurs)..
