The hashtags, DayZero and WaterCrisis have been trending this week in reference to February the first, when taps in the Western Cape province are expected to run dry. Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, was set to meet with the National Disaster Management team yesterday and she’s also reported to have written a letter to president Jacob Zuma, asking him to declare the water situation a national disaster. She joins us now from our SeaPoint studio.

May 18, 2018 is being called “Day Zero” in South Africa. By that day, the country’s second largest city is projected to be without water and its dams at catastrophic levels. So how did Cape Town reach this point?

South Africa is experiencing a major drought. 2017 was the driest year in decades, and the third successive year of poor rainfall. Dams have gone unreplenished, underground aquifers are tapped out, springs and boreholes are running dry. Calls by the mayor’s office to the city’s more than 4 million residents to cut water use to less than 87 litres per person have gone unheeded. Fines have been flouted. And water has already been shut down for several hours a day in areas outside the city center.

Climatologists have pointed to climate change as a possible factor. And future projections show a shift towards a drier climate. Some activists even say the water crisis is political. They blame poor cooperation and coordination between the African National Congress ruling party, and the local and provincial government of the Western Cape run by the Democratic Alliance. Western Cape government officials say appeals to declare the province a disaster zone went unheeded by the ANC for months.

But a recent report by the South African Water Caucus found financial mismanagement and corruption in the local Department of Water and Sanitation, and that the city responded to warning signals too late.

On Wednesday we’ll take a look at the debate around the root of the crisis, and how Cape Town is planning for the near future. Join us at 1930GMT.

Water crisis continues to grip Cape Town, which is set to become the first major world metropolitan to run out of water if stringent water measures that have been put in place from today at only 50 litres of water per person per day come into effect. The city is desperate to avoid what is called day zero, or the day taps will run dry and 4 million people will have to stand in lines to get just 25 litres of water per person per day.

Capture the rain! (Now legal in Washington state). A quick look at roof water harvesting using a slow sand filter combined with a diverter. This is an overview of the procedure and a demonstration of a working system. An instructional video on how to build a system can be found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-_RDB… As of September 18, 2016 this filter is still running and producing clean water. The sand has not been changed. See www.slowsandfilter.org and www.shared-source-initiative.c… for lots more information on these filters. Also www.roofwaterharvesting.org and www.enlight-inc.com/blog/ are two sites that have detailed instructions on how to build one of these filters. Do your own water testing: www.micrologylabs.com/categor… What kind of sand to use: www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?m=20… www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?m=20… The water test results from this filter (called filer 1) can be found at our website here: slowsandfilter.org/results_fou… Scroll about half way down the page. System demonstrated in the video shows how a small pond it used to store overflow, and how the rain bench diverter/ filter system works.
We just built a rain harvesting system using the do-it-yourself rain bench by Second Rain. We put it in our yard about 12 feet from the Saving Rain diverter that is in the downspout on the corner of our house. This bench will hold 65 gallons of rainwater and very affordable. We only had to purchase 1 sheet of plywood and some 2×2’s. So I have a rain collection unit and a bench!

In this video I cover the complete fresh water system for our cabin. We harvest rainwater for our needs. We use gutter system on the house to dump into five 55 gallon barrels then into a 250 gallon tote. We then transfer it into other storage when we can. Also we transfer it into our main 250 gallon tote to supply our home. We use a 4.5 amp well pump to move the water into the cabin then it is filtered with a 3 stage filter system. Sediment, carbon and Carbon blocker. It really insures the water is just water. We use a instant on LPG hot water heater to supply our hot water needs.

Our water can come from a range of sources.

Surface water is water from creeks and rivers, stored in dams and weirs. In South East Queensland, surface water is the most common source of drinking water.

No single water supply option can meet South East Queensland’s long-term water security needs. As a community, we need to consider our demand for water, the water supply options available to us and the way we operate the SEQ Water Grid.

Check Dams

Check Dams (gully rehabilitation and reclamation)

Watch this video on YouTube.

Soil erosion is a challenge throughout the world. Soil erosion results in the loss of soil and loss of usable land. If left unmanaged erosion will result in gullies. It is important to manage erosion in order to prevent the loss of valuable soil and to maintain the area of usable land. One technique for managing soil erosion and gullies is the construction of check dams. The check dams trap the sediment behind the check dam and slowly reclaim the land. This also helps to prevent downstream impacts. Eventually the land can be reused. There are different types of check dams depending on the severity of the gully and the rate of flow of the water e.g. simple vegetation barriers, to more hardy stone based check dams. This video demonstrates how to construct check dams in erosion channels or for gully reclamation.
